Roger Rossignol is a mechanic who works at Whitney's Tool Shed, just down the hill from the University of Maine. He lives about seven miles north of downtown Machias, and he is seen here at his home with a wood splitter that he and his father built about thirty years ago. Roger still uses it to split wood as if it were brand new. The massive wedge shown is propelled downward at great speed, cleaving wood in two more efficiently than any axe-wielding lumberjack could. Equipped with built-in flood lights, it makes for quite a sight running at full tilt at night. The red paint, now peeling and in considerable danger of being redone, is courtesy of Roger's wife Cindy, who often helps with splitting.
