At 53, Roger isn't young, but he's amazingly spry and limber. In installing a new trailer hitch on a truck, he has no trouble moving around, laying on the ground, and contorting himself to reach awkward places. This amazing level of physical fitness can be attributed in part to Roger's lifestyle: he has never smoked, never drunk, and never used drugs. At the end of the day, when his colleagues go out partying, drinking, and smoking, Roger goes home to spend time with his family and his mechanical projects.
Despite his clean lifestyle, Roger has had more than his fare share of health problems. About sixteen years ago he was diagnosed with cancer. He underwent surgery and has been cancer-free since 1992, but it wasn't an easy process. The surgery left a large depression on the right side of his face and neck where a muscle was removed. However, surviving cancer gave Roger a new outlook on life, and a most astoundingly positive attitude. He feels that his brush with cancer, and a few more death-defying events in his life, mean that there is a definite purpose to his existence. He doesn't know what it might be, or even if he's found it yet, but it gives him an optimism and excitement about life that few others possess.
